"Damn Matt, I thought we were closer than that": Giannis Antetokounmpo has an endearing reaction after learning how a Bucks beat reporter is no longer on the job

Giannis Antetokounmpo has long been viewed as one of the most good-natured, benevolent NBA superstars today.

The Greek Freak was depicted as an innocent guy in the Bleacher Report parody Game of Zones with good reason. He displays the innocence and pure emotions of a child when he’s under the public eye.

Giannis has a few heated moments on court – his elbow on OG Anunoby this week was just another example of that. But apart from those occasional failings, the Freak has always been a model citizen everywhere.

Matt Velazquez was a beat reporter for the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal over the past few seasons. He’d developed a great working relationship with Giannis over his time covering the Bucks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is saddened to hear about Matt Velazquez

In today’s pre-game press availability for the Bucks, Giannis began looking and asking around for his favorite beat writer at one point. This interaction proves how much he cares about the community and team around him.

“I have one question for all of you. Where is Matt Velazquez? Where is he?”

“He left us, he got a new job.”

“He left us?”

“Yeah, his wife is gonna be a doctor so he’s moving to support her.”

“Wow, I can’t believe it. Indianapolis? So he left us without saying anything? Oh my goodness. Damn, Matt, I thought we were closer than that.”
