"Germans Make the Best Cars and Never Get Bored": Boasting Michael Jordan Led 'Dream Team', Charles Barkley Saw No Problem in the 1992 Olympic Team 31 Years Ago

The 1992 Dream Team was the first to field all-active NBA players, most of whom are current Hall of Famers and then-All-Stars. Charles Barkley had the perfect explanation to describe the star power and the team’s invincibility at that time. In his book, ‘Sir Charles: The Wit and Wisdom of Charles Barkley‘, he wrote how the US National team would never get ‘bored’ of winning as the best basketball team in the world.

The Dream Team consisted of the likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Karl Malone, all great legends of the NBA. Interestingly, Charles Barkley was the leading scorer for the team, averaging 18 points per game throughout the duration of the tournament. Thanks to the prowess and firepower of this team, the United States brought home an Olympic gold medal, after an unbeaten run in the tournament.

Charles Barkley once explained why the 1992 Dream Team was never bored of winning

Charles Barkley had the perfect analogy to explain the legacy and firepower of the 1992 Dream Team. For Chuck, the ‘best’ basketball team would never get bored of winning, just like the Germans would never get bored of making the best vehicles for the global automobile industry. Using this interesting example, Chuck remarked:

“Germans make the best cars and never get bored. Why should Americans get bored when they play the best basketball?”

As aforementioned above, the Dream Team already consisted of the best from the NBA of that generation. Hence, egos were bound to clash, with league rivals being on the same team for an elite competition for the first time. Reminiscing on his experience in the team, Barkley further added:

“I mean it was so intense, but we still remained friends after it was over. But man, our egos… I’ve never been in my entire basketball life in things as intense as those practices.”

Nevertheless, with countless fiery practices and scrimmages, the US National Team went unbeaten through all of their eight games in the tournament. In the gold medal match of the tournament, the United States defeated Croatia 117-115, bringing home the gold from the Olympics. Though attempted several times, no other generations of Team USA have been able to replicate the legacy of this team to date.

International opponents would cry when facing the 1992 Dream Team

Given the star power of the 1992 US National Team, it’s bound to strike awe for anyone facing one. This was exactly the situation that several international opponents of the dream team faced while facing them in the Olympic tournament. As per Magic Johnson, some players even started weeping on the prospect of facing their childhood heroes in one of the most elite global competitions.

Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson were particularly bemused when they faced Argentina in the tournament. One Argentinian player refused to drive into the basket, just so that the bench could get the perfect picture.

Surely, the star power of the team created a surreal situation for their opponents of facing the world’s best in the sport. This very well sums up the legacy of the Dream Team, which lasts in the annals of basketball history to this day.
