Victor Wembanyama’s ethnicity and where he is from have always been a point of inquiry for fans across the globe. And especially now, with the NBA draft lottery having been released, those questions have only gotten stronger. While many may think the answer to that question is a simple ‘French’, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The young man slated to go to the Spurs at first overall has a very rich ethnic history that requires diving into.

Victor Wembanyama was born on January 4th, 2004 (19 years old) to two loving parents, Felix Wembanyama and Elodie de Fautereau. He currently stands at 7’4”, yet is a very fluid athlete, giving him comparisons to the likes of Kevin Durant and even Tim Duncan already.
What is Victor Wembanyama’s ethnicity?
Victor Wembanyama is of mixed ethnicity. His father, Felix, is of Congolese descent and even represented the Republic of Congo in the long jump and triple jump while standing at a towering 6’6”. So, as you can see now, Victor Wembanyama’s dexterity and athleticism at his size hardly came as a surprise to his family.
However, it’d be wrong to say he got it all from his father. His mother, Elodie, stands at a tall 6’3” herself. As for her ethnicity, she is of Caucasian descent and was born and raised in France. She not only played but also coached basketball, something that helped incredibly in fostering a love for the sport in a young Victor Wembanyama. Further, she even represented the French National Team in the sport for a long time. So, in many ways, Victor Wembanyama’s journey to the NBA was always written in the stars.
And when he does enter the league, he will only be one of three players from the Republic of Congo, joining Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga and Suns’ Bismack Biyombo on that list.
That said, of course, Victor Wembanyama won’t just represent the African country. He was also raised in France, doing most of his prep work before his NBA career there. So, France will likely pump out their chest with pride too.
Setting all this aside, we have a rather important question. Just how good is Victor Wembanyama already? What did Victor Wembanyama average on his previous team prior to the 2023 NBA draft?
