Quincy Promes goal vs Chelsea was wrongly adjudged offside by VAR after checking the wrong frame

Quincy Promes goal vs Chelsea was wrongly adjudged offside by VAR after checking the wrong frame during their Champions league encounter.

Ajax’s horror run against English sides and more specifically teams from London, continued last night when they lost 0-1 to Frank Lampard’s young side. This was their first loss in all competitions since their loss in their Champions League semi-final encounter at home against Tottenham; another English club from London.

Both Ajax and Chelsea have built their recent success on the back of young home-grown talents. However, the youth from West London continued Chelsea’s success at away European games; stretching their unbeaten run to 9 games, of which they have won 7 now.

Michy Batshuayi’s 87th winner gave Chelsea the all important 3 points. However, the win did not come without controversy as VAR made the headlines for the wrong reason once again.

In the first home of the Ajax vs Chelsea encounter, it seemed that the Dutch side had taken the lead. Hakim Ziyech provided a brilliant cross to Quincy Promes who tapped the ball in to score the opener for the Dutch champions.

However, VAR came into play and the goal was adjudged to have been an offside. The picture and frame provided to viewers in the stadium and around the world seemed to vindicate the referee’s decision of denying the goal.

Interestingly though, the ruling has been caught in controversy after images emerged after the match which have suggested that the VAR used an incorrect frame to make their decision on the legitimacy of the goal.

In the pictures below, Quincy Promes is arguably offside when the ball leaves Ziyech’s feet. However, the next frame suggests that Promes was actually onside when the cross was made.

The goal if allowed to stand, would have ensured that Ajax’s unbeaten season would have remained intact. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case and Ajax have been denied a point in the Champions League. London has yet again been their bane.
