During the South Group match of the ongoing Vitality T20 Blast between Somerset and Middlesex in Taunton, veteran Somerset all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe was seen outplaying veteran Middlesex all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez to send the latter back to the pavilion.
It all happened on the fourth delivery of the ninth over when another veteran in AB de Villiers played a delivery back to the bowler. Sensing that Hafeez had backed up too far, van der Merwe under-armed the ball back to the wickets without even watching it.
With him not watching the stumps, it didn’t give any clue whatsoever to the batsman. While Hafeez did try to return back to the crease, his attempt fell short against van der Merwe’s guile. Coming in to bat at No. 4 in the fifth over, Hafeez ended up scoring 18 (16) with the help of two fours.
Hafeez’s dismissal turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Middlesex as he was replaced by England’s limited-overs skipper in Eoin Morgan. The arrival of Morgan saw him making a mockery of a 227-run target as the visitors registered victory in 17 overs.
It was an unbeaten match-winning 99-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Eoin Morgan and George Scott which aided the visitors in sealing a 227-run target.
