Barcelona’s faced a stunning setback in their La Liga campaign this week, as they were held down by bottom-placed Leganes. After comfortably leading 1-0 at halftime, Barcelona conceded two goals in 90 seconds, losing the match 2-1.
The loss in the midweek fixture was their only second loss this year, the first one being against Levante towards the end of the last season.
Now, Spanish media outlet AS reports that Barcelona’s defender, Samuel Umtiti, has suffered a ‘serious knee injury’. There’s alarm in the Catalan camp as Barcelona have been increasingly reliant on Samuel Umtiti this season.
The Frenchman has featured in all the matches for Barcelona so far, making seven appearances in total for the club. With a drop in form of Gerard Pique, Samuel Umtiti’s role at the central defence has been more significant in this season.
However, AS now claims that Umtiti’s injury could keep him out for several months from football. The footballer has reportedly torn a ligament in his left leg.
In the absence of Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet will likely be the first-choice centre-backs for Barcelona. Thomas Vermaelen could further step up as a back-up option for the two defenders at the center.
However, the absence of Umtiti will be a huge blow for Barcelona, as the Frenchman is regarded as one of the best defenders in the league.
