TheSportsRush brings the inspirational story of the Bruun family, who made their name in Shukokai Karate.

Pentti Bruun, 56, started practising Shukokai Karate, a Japanese style of the sport, in 1979. As the Karate-form gained international recognition with the foundation of Kimura Shukokai International (KSI) in 1995, Bruun began intensive training, along with his children, Camilla (1991) and Benjamin (1994).

Today, the family boasts of three Shukokai Karate world champions.

Shokokai Karate, as the family states, plays a ‘significant role in everyday life.’ Camilla Bruun won the gold medal in the 2006 KSI World Championships, which began an era of family domination in the sport.

While Benjamin Bruun won seven KSI World Championships gold medals (twice in both Kata and Kumite competitions), father Pentti Bruun became the world champion in 2012.

Winning has become a tradition for the Bruun family. A thorough dedication and commitment towards their passion reflect on their incredible list of achievements. Pentti Bruun states that Shukokai Karate has become a part of their everyday life, and the family travels around the world to participate in training camps and competitions.

According to Bruun, sport teaches various human lessons. As the family trains together, various human values are instilled with every aspect of Shukokai Karate.

“It teaches people to become better humans. The observance of other people and the mental development are both very important aspects in Karate,” Bruun says.

The family has become a leading torchbearer in the Karate form, which is efficiently promoted by the Kimura Shukokai International, the international governing body of the sport. Headed by the four disciples of Soke Shigeru Kimura 10th Dan, the KSI continue to teach and develop Master Kimura’s distinctive technique.

With time, the organization has spread its wings across various countries in Europe, North America, Africa & Asia, thus promoting the sport around the globe. Today, KSI is one of the biggest single style organizations in the world.
