"Misleading to Think Carlos Alcaraz Can Surpass 20 Grand Slam Titles": Novak Djokovic's Former Coach Cautions Against Federer, Nadal Comparison

Carlos Alcaraz is arguably the most exciting prospect in men’s tennis. Still aged only 20, the Spaniard has already won two Grand Slams and looks set to win many more in the future. Alcaraz is known for his aggressive game, which physically destroys his opponents and confuses them due to his unpredictability.

The 20-year-old has played some incredible matches like the Wimbledon 2023 final against Novak Djokovic and the Indian Wells 2022 match against Rafael Nadal, which has firmly established him as the future of tennis. Although Carlos Alcaraz is still relatively raw, he has suffered some shock losses already where he failed to bring out his A-game. Going into a game as the favorite to win, Alcaraz has experienced some shock defeats as all athletes do.

1) Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev – US Open 2023 semi-final

Medvedev defeated Alcaraz 7-6(3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals of the US Open 2023. The Spaniard was largely the favorite to make it to the final and face Novak Djokovic but the Russian proved too good on the night. This result meant Alcaraz lost his No.1 ranking in the world and will end 2023 with just one Grand Slam win.

2) Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner – China Open 2023 semi-final

Jannik Sinner came out all guns blazing right from the start against Carlos Alcaraz in the China Open semifinals recently. Sinner became the first player to record 4 tour-level victories over the Spaniard. The Italian won the cagey first set in a tie-breaker, before Alcaraz totally faltered, losing 1-6 in the second set. This straight sets defeat was a shock result for the Spaniard as he was the favorite to advance to the final.

3) Alcaraz vs Paul – Rogers Cup 2023 quarter-final

Carlos Alcaraz was expected to roll over USA’s Tommy Paul. However, the American shocked the tennis world by ending the Spaniard’s 14-match winning streak by winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the semi-final. In fact, this was a repeat of last year’s result in the same tournament as Paul had defeated Alcaraz in the Round of 32.

4) Alcaraz vs Goffin – Astana Open 2022

Carlos Alcaraz, the World No.1 suffered a shock 5-7, 3-6 loss to former top 10 player, David Goffin in the first round of the Astana Open 2022. Goffin, who made the draw as a lucky loser, defeated the favorite Alcaraz in straight sets. This was the Spaniard’s first straight sets defeat since November 2021.

5) Alcaraz vs Sinner – Croatia Open 2022

Jannik Sinner, the second seed, came back from a set down in the final of the Croatia Open 2022 to defeat top seed Carlos Alcaraz 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1. The Spaniard won a tightly contested first set before being thoroughly outplayed by the Italian. Alcaraz only managed to win two games in the second and third set as Sinner went on a rampage. This was one of the worst performances of Alcaraz’s young career.

While losing is never a good feeling, Carlos Alcaraz has made sure to learn from each defeat to come back stronger. The Spaniard is now on the very top of the men’s game and looks set to dominate tennis for years to come.
