Twitter reactions on Mayank Markande’s T20I debut: Twitter was elated at the 21-year old cricketer making his national debut.

During the first T20I of the ongoing Australia’s tour of India at Visakhapatnam, Australia captain Aaron Finch has won the toss and chose to field. Australia have handed a debut to wicket-keeper batsman Peter Handscomb.

On the other hand, the hosts have handed a debut to 21-year old leg-spinner Mayank Markande. Coming into the side in place of chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav, Markande wasn’t expected to play the first match.

His inclusion also means that India will defend a total with three spinners in Markande, Yuzvendra Chahal and Krunal Pandya on a pitch where the opposition has played four specialist fast bowlers.

Markande had come into recognition after his maiden stint with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League last year. In the 14 matches which he played, he picked up 15 wickets at an average of 24.53, an economy rate of 8.36 and a strike rate of 17.60.

Since then he has been part of the India A squad across formats. Apart from performing consistently for them, Markande has also done well for him home state of Punjab. In seven First-class matches, Markande has dismissed 34 batsmen at an average of 21.26, an economy rate of 2.77 and a strike rate of 45.9.

Among the other changes from the last T20I that they played, India have included Kohli, opening batsman Lokesh Rahul, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and the fast bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav. Much like Markande, even Rahul wasn’t expected to play the first match ahead of Shikhar Dhawan.

Markande’s inclusion allured numerous reactions on social media platform Twitter.
