During the third ODI of the ongoing West Indies’ tour of India in Cuttack, India defeated West Indies by 4 wickets in a cliffhanger to win the three-match series 2-1.
Chasing a 316-run target, Indian openers stitched a 122-run opening partnership to provide a solid start to their team. However, a disappointing show from the middle-order put the hosts in trouble.
Coming in to bat at No. 3 in the 22nd over, India captain Virat Kohli wouldn’t have thought of the match going down to the wire. While the 31-year old player put on display his top game from the word go, regular fall of wickets put his 55th ODI half-century into the limelight.
The second to none chaser in Kohli had to do all the hark work especially when the likes of batsman Shreyas Iyer (7), wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant (7) and all-rounder Kedar Jadhav (9) were dismissed in quick succession.
There was a time when it appeared that Kohli and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja would seal the chase for the hosts but the former playing on a Keemo Paul delivery saw another twist in the match. Having scored 85 (81) with the help of nine fours, Kohli was the pick of the Indian batsmen.
The tense chase was eventually closed by Jadeja (39 not out) and pacer Shardul Thakur (17 not out) who stitched a brisk 30-run partnership to make India win in the penultimate over.

Fabulous run chase by India. Among best I’ve seen in, more so as stiff target wasn’t achieved by 1 or 2 players. Rohit, Rahul, Virat, Jadeja, Thakur all made significant contributions. West Indies competed hard but India just that shade better. Well played!

Virat Kohli moves past Kallis on the all-time ODI run-getters list
How high on this list would he end up when he’s done?https://t.co/dx1iUY5cvV pic.twitter.com/evrFe4viJZ

Shardul Thakur, the finisher India never knew they had.
Look at Virat Kohli, the guy has 5k runs in chases yet he is celebrating with double gusto and energy.

Final match of the series.
Final match of the year.
Final match of the decade.
And that’s the finish we wanted.
Redemption comes in all colours.
