During the ongoing fifth Test of the Pataudi Trophy between England and India at The Oval, the two captains in Virat Kohli and Joe Root along with England’s premier fast bowler James Anderson were seen arguing with each other on the ground.
The argument in reference was happening regarding umpire Kumar Dharmasena’s decision to not rule Kohli out leg before delivery on a James Anderson delivery.
It happened in the 29th over of the Indian innings when James Anderson was called back for his third spell of the day. Anderson had started the over with a couple of balls which moved away from the batsman.
Bowling the third delivery of his sixth over, Anderson changed ways to bowl the in-swinger which had hit Kohli’s front pad. The Englishmen appealed in unison as if they were sure of getting the priced scalp of Kohli. It would not be wrong to say that the question asked was very close but the umpire ruled the decision in the batsman’s favor.
Root called for the review straightaway which revealed that the ball had hit Kohli’s pad outside the off-stump. With the impact outside off, the on-field umpire’s decision was upheld, which seemed to not go well with the hosts.
Apparently, Anderson went to the umpire after the over, telling him that he should have given the verdict as out in the first place. As the umpire was talking to Root, Kohli interfered in between, questioning the bowler’s behavior. Kohli then took a go at Anderson as well.
It is also worth mentioning that Kohli and Anderson have shared a rivalry in the past. Anderson had got Kohli out several times during India’s tour of England in 2014. The rivalry was expected to pursue in this series as well. However, a more determined Kohli hasn’t let that happen till now in the series.
