Watch the video of Video Assistant Referee(VAR) helping out to cancel the second yellow card to turn into straight red.
There has been a lot of discussion about the Video Assistant Referee(VAR) mainly on the pros and cons. It lies to the referee who takes the decisions ultimately. In the game between Legia Warsaw and Cracovia, it was used to perfection by the referee.
Legia Warsaw lost their home fixture to Cracovia and their defender William Remy got sent off for receiving a second yellow in the game. However, his teammates requested the referee to check with the newly available technology to get a clear cut answer.
Meanwhile, the French International was quick to march into the dressing room when he was dismissed by the referee. After having a closer look in the Television, the referee asked the defender to come back to the pitch again.
Thinking he got away with one, Remy was heading back with a smile to resume the action in the field. But, the referee was prepared not to let him go that easily by cancelling out the second yellow card and to produce a straight red which will see him miss three league games rather than one.
Bit muggy this. Calling back the player from the dressing room after he received a 2nd yellow card to give him a straight red after a VAR review in the Polish league pic.twitter.com/ke20yDnMo0

There is no doubt that Video Assistant Referees (VAR) is helping out the officials to help out with many calls similar to this. If the men in the room were not contacted, Remy wouldn’t have been banned for three matches for a blatant stamp on the opponent.
It was Bundesliga who first chose to work with this technology. The German top tier league initiated this and it became a big hit throughout the world. A season later it was used in Spain and Italy. UEFA announced that this technology will be used from the knockout rounds of the competition.
When there was a controversial call between Real Madrid and Ajax, official Twitter handle of UEFA Champions League decided to clarify by posting a tweet.
VAR in the UCL: in the 38th minute of the Ajax v Madrid first leg, Nicolás Tagliafico’s headed goal was ruled out following a VAR review. The referee identified that Tagliafico’s team-mate Dušan Tadić was in an offside position and interfering with the goalkeeper – pic.twitter.com/sPtZFd6YiB

preventing him from playing or being able to play the ball – as the header was being made. This was in line with VAR protocol and the goal was correctly overturned and a free-kick given for offside.

Premier League have also confirmed that there will be a usage of the Video Assistant Referee from next season..
