Chris Gayle retirement: West Indies legend to not retire after 2019 World Cup; discloses new date

Chris Gayle retirement: The Universe Boss has cited a change in mind with respect to his retirement from international cricket.

A ‘change of mind’ for veteran West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle means that he will not retire from international cricket after the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The 39-year old cricketer had earlier revealed that he would hang his boots post the showpiece event.

“It’s still not the end. I still have a few games to go. May be another series to go, as well. Who knows, we will see what happens,” Gayle was quoted as saying to the reporters on the eve of West Indies’ clash against India in Manchester.

Further speaking on the same issue, Gayle disclosed that he will play the upcoming series against India. While he was adamant at not playing the T20I series, he expressed interest at playing both the Test and ODI series.

“My plans after World Cup? I may play a Test match against India and then I will definitely play the ODIs against India. I won’t play the T20s for sure. That’s my plan after the World Cup,” Gayle said.

Starting from August 3, India are scheduled to play three T20Is, three ODIs and a couple of Test matches during their tour of West Indies.

Having last played a Test against Bangladesh in 2014, Gayle will take field in whites after half-a-decade. In 456 international outings during his two-decade long career, Gayle has scored 19,186 runs across formats including 42 centuries and 103 half-centuries.

“Yes, Chris [Gayle] will play his last series against India,” West Indies media manager Philip Spooner later confirmed about the legendary cricketer’s retirement plans.

It is worth mentioning that Gayle will continue to take part in overseas T20 leagues. In the Indian Premier League, Gayle currently plays for Kings XI Punjab.
