Why India have been awarded 60 points for winning Antigua Test vs West Indies
India have been awarded 60 points: India are currently the table-toppers in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship.
India winning the first Test of their ongoing tour of West Indies at Antigua saw them registering their biggest ever overseas victory in Test matches. Other than the significant achievement, India also got off the mark in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship.
Currently, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka have 60 points under their belt. While India have played a lone Test match, New Zealand and Sri Lanka have played two matches each. Therefore, India are the table-toppers at this point in time.
Having played three Tests each, both Australia and England have all won, loss and been part of a drawn match each. The two teams have 32 points (eight points for the drawn match) to their name. West Indies, who lost the only match that they have played, are yet to get off the mark.
Why India have been awarded 60 points for winning Antigua Test
A general confusion doing the rounds is regarding the difference in points between India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka and Australia and England. With all the five teams winnings a match each, the drastic difference in points (60 and 24) earned by them has called for a lot of queries regarding the points system.
Playing fewer Tests in the World Test Championship should be a bad thing….but it isn’t. On the contrary, it’s an advantage. India beating WI fetched them 60 points. England beating Australia in #TheAshes got them 24 points. Go figure.

It is worth mentioning that the Test Championship will see each team playing six Test series – three home and three away. The series which will fall under the Championship will see only two to five matches being played in it.
Each Test series will give a team a chance of accumulating a maximum of 120 points. Therefore, points earned in a two-match series will differ from points earned in a five-match series. The number of points for a Test can be calculated by dividing 120 (points) with the number of Tests in the series.
