David De Gea VAR controversy: VAR rules out Liverpool goal after Van Dijk-De Gea clash in the ongoing Premier league encounter.

Liverpool appeared to have put the game past Manchester United when Roberto Firmino found the back of the net before half-time. However, the goal was denied after it was sent to VAR, who concluded that the keeper was wrongly pressured by Virgil Van Dijk in the lead up to the goal.

Liverpool full back Trent Alexander-Arnold sent a cross inside the box hunting for a goal. Virgil Van Dijk rose to get the ball. David De Gea fumbled the save and allowed the hosts to regain possession. Roberto Firmino then curled the ball into the far post to find the back of the net.

The Spanish keeper and the rest of the Manchester United squad were furious with the decision and voiced their disagreement with the referee. David De Gea in particular, was fuming at the decision and received a yellow card for dissent.

The goal was sent to VAR and was immediately chalked off. The decision makers concluded that Van Dijk had made no attempt to play the ball and made the controversial decision which has since divided fans on the matter.

Earlier in the match, Virgil Van Dijk put his side ahead, after jumping over everyone in the box to meet a corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 14th minute of the match. United had a brilliant chance to level the score when Aaron Wan-Bissaka chipped in a through ball behind Liverpool’s defence.

However, Andreas Pereira failed to meet the ball. Which means that both sides leave the field at half-time with the hosts still leading by a goal.
