Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss on Redskins name controversy – ‘Name change won’t alter team’s history’.

LA Lakers owner Jeanie buss took to twitter to show support in the movement to change the name of the NFL franchise Washington “Redskins”. 

Amid increased pressure on Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder to change the controversial name, some very strong and interesting takes on the matter are coming in.

The Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss recently took to twitter and said ‘Name change won’t alter team’s history’. Buss was talking about the NFL team’s controversial name.

What is the Redskins name controversy?

There has been growing criticism surrounding the NFL franchise’s name. With claims that it is racist and offensive to a particular culture.

“Redskin” is a term used for Native American Indians.

More and more pressure has been added on the NFL team to change their name. FedEx, one of the sponsors of the team formally requested the DC team to change its name.

But it’s not just FedEx. Two other major sponsors are making serious waves for the same cause which are Pepsi and Nike.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss’s view

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Buss dismissed the argument that changing the name would erase the team’s history.

Buss said the team’s legacy isn’t defined by its name but rather by the people who built the team.

Buss said that it’s the players who make the history, not the name and not the logo.

She pointed out Washington Redskins legends such as Art Monk, Doug Williams, Dexter Manley, and Darrell Green as those who truly represent the proud history of the team.

“The argument I’ve heard is ‘if we change the team name we lose our history,’ Buss wrote. “My reply: it’s HUMAN BEINGS who created the memories and won the games, NOT a LOGO. A change in name will not alter what Art Monk, Dexter Manley, Darrell Green, Doug Williams, etc. means to the fans.”

Why did Jeanie Buss comment on the Redskins controversy?

While Buss’s opinion on the matter may seem random on the surface, she actually does have a connection to the team. Her father, the late Dr. Jerry Buss, purchased the Lakers from former Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke.

Buss wasn’t the only NBA figure to weigh in on the matter. Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal also reacted to news of FedEx’s request, saying “Love it.”

The NBA has always actively supported the movement against racism.
