Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis arrested as road accident allegedly kills 64-year old

Kusal Mendis arrested: The Sri Lankan wicket-keeper batsman has been arrested by the police according to reports in the Sri Lankan media.

Sri Lanka wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Mendis has been arrested by North Police in Sri Lanka following a road accident involving him allegedly killing a 64-year old man.

According to the Sri Lankan media, the unfortunate accident happened near the 13th KM post in the Horethuduwa area in Panadura, south of Colombo, at around 5 AM on Sunday.

It is being reported that the 64-year old man, who succumbed to his injuries while being admitted to the hospital, was on his bicycle before getting hit by Mendis’ SUV which is now in police custody.

While no official statement has come in from the 25-year old player, he has been produced before a doctor for an examination and is expected to be produced before a magistrate in the next 48 hours.

It was North Police spokesperson SSP Jaliya Senaratne who confirmed the news of Mendis’ arrest. As far as the deceased is concerned, he is said to be a resident of Gorakapola area in Panadura.

Mendis, who last played for Sri Lanka during their home series against West Indies in March, has been an integral part of their team across formats.

In 146 internationals since his debut for Sri Lanka in , Mendis has scored 5,646 runs across formats at an average of 31.71 including nine centuries and 33 half-centuries.

Also known for keeping wickets, Mendis hadn’t got many opportunities behind the wickets primarily because of the presence of other wicket-keeper batsmen in Kusal Perera and Niroshan Dickwella. In four limited-over matches a designated wicket-keeper, Mendis has scored 157 runs at an average of 39.25 including a half-century.

The right-hand batsman was among the Sri Lankan players who officially resumed training in the form of a residential training camp in Colombo.
