“That’s why he is such an important signing for us”— Otmar Szafnauer on Sebastian Vettel
“That’s why he is such an important signing for us”— Otmar Szafnauer reflecting on how important was the signing of Sebastian Vettel.
Sebastian Vettel joined Aston Martin after Ferrari chose not to resume the association with him in 2021. For the first time after Toro Rosso, Sebastian Vettel would be competing for a team that isn’t full-fledged equipped with the best resources.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin has been touted as an interesting project, and Vettel according to the team principal Otmar Szafnauer is a key part to it.
“In Sebastian, we have a proven four-time world champion with experience of helping teams become race-winning and championship-contending outfits,” said Szafnauer to the Skysport.com.
“That’s why he is such an important signing for us. He brings a winning mentality, and we will all undoubtedly learn a lot from him on this journey. … It’s hugely exciting for everyone in the team.”
Is that all easy?
Sebastian Vettel joined Ferrari to break Mercedes’ ongoing dominance, but five years of struggle with him led them nowhere. Especially in 2018 and 2019, when Ferrari comparatively had a better engine.
Though one can argue about the aerodynamics aspect, Ferrari had their own chances to blow away, and Vettel was equally responsible for most of it.
Vettel going into Aston Martin is surely out of his peak, even if the newly formed team to realistically challenge after the two-year spell, then one doesn’t know how capable Vettel would be in leading this team.
On the other hand, meritocracy hasn’t fully accepted Lance Stroll with him not consistent enough. In 2020, he finished behind his ex-teammate Sergio Perez by 25 points, resulting in a gap of 7 positions.
Thus, it would only be realistic to view Aston Martin as an irritant to the big guns and nothing more, especially when Mclaren is rising back and Ferrari is working to return to their lethal self.
