“I thought there would be a chance for me”- Antonio Giovinazzi disappointed for not receiving a call from Maranello to replace Sebastian Vettel.
Ferrari already made up its mind to not continue with Sebastian Vettel back at the start of 2020. Antonio Giovinazzi thought, maybe it’s his time to drive for Ferrari.
But instead, the team went for Carlos Sainz, who has more experience than Giovinazzi, who just completed his rookie season with Alfa Romeo.
Yet, Giovinazzi felt a bit disappointed, when the bosses at Maranello didn’t make a call up for him, and went for Sainz, as per the Italian who revealed in an interview with Autosport.
“Ferrari still employs me, and I thought there would be a chance for me to race for the Scuderia. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time for me,” he said.
In 2019, it would have been a huge gamble for Ferrari to pair up Charles Leclerc and him, who jointly have five years of experience in F1, and lack of experience often leads to costly mistakes.
Furthermore, Giovinazzi showed progress in 2020 and will drive for Alfa Romeo in 2021 too, courtesy to Mick Schumacher’s transfer to Haas.
My time will come
Giovinazzi is certain that soon he would be competing for Ferrari, and no promotion in 2020 doesn’t mean that it is the end of his dreams, as he promises to work hard.
“Choosing Sainz does not mean that I will not be able to get that seat in the future. A seat at Ferrari will always be my dream,” he said. “I have never received anything for free in my career. I have always had to work hard to earn a place.
“Right now, I am focused on Alfa Romeo. I want to help my team move forward as much as possible, and that is why I would like to secure a place on the podium.
“To do that, I have to keep improving and seize my opportunities. Let’s see if that works in 2021.”
