WATCH: Cristiano Ronaldo embarrasses himself with an ugly dive against APOEL
Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid had the perfect start to their Champions League title defence last night, winning comprehensively against APOEL, who were made to look lie pedestrians for most part of the game.
With Asensio and Benzema out for the fixture, Ronaldo was deployed in a more central role and he ended up flourishing in it, scoring two goals and taking his side home.
The first one was a brilliant, acute finish, as all three forwards, Bale, Isco and Ronaldo got involved in an inch perfect counter attack.
Real Madrid were then awarded a penalty at the start of the second half, when the APOEL central defender handled the ball(not very conspicuously). Ronaldo stepped up and gleefully accepted his second goal of the night.
But, an incident in the 47th minute got the eye of many, where Ronaldo tried to dribble past the APOEL defenders and then shot his strike wide, but appealed to the referee for a foul, when there was no contact whatsover.
Fans all over social media went berserk, terming it as a dive, and requesting further investigation into it by the UEFA.
By the looks of it, it seems as if there was no contact, and Ronaldo was in fact appealing for something that just wasn’t there. It was a dive in all probability, something that should have been punished(a yellow card for simulation).
