Kieron Pollard catch vs Sri Lanka: West Indian captain grabs first-rate return catch to dismiss counterpart Dimuth Karunaratne
Kieron Pollard catch vs Sri Lanka: The West Indian captain broke a crucial 105-run partnership between the Sri Lankan openers.
During the first ODI of the ongoing Sri Lanka’s tour of West Indies in North Sound, West Indies captain Kieron Pollard put on display a praiseworthy fielding effort to dismiss his counterpart Dimuth Karunaratne.
It all happened on the second delivery of the 20th over when the Sri Lankan captain became victim of a soft dismissal. Wanting to play an ordinary fuller delivery down the ground, the slowness of the surface resulted in Karunaratne playing an aerial drive.
Into his follow through, Pollard was alert enough to chance a catching opportunity. While he couldn’t grab the ball in the first attempt, he eventually dived to his right to complete the catch and break a 105-run opening partnership.
Karunaratne, who scored 52 (61) with the help of four fours, was among the two other Sri Lankan batsmen in Danushka Gunathilaka (55) and Ashen Bandara (50) as Sri Lanka were bundled out for 232 in 49 overs.
In the five economical overs that he bowled, Pollard gave away just 15 runs for a wicket. With bowling figures of 4-1-12-2, West Indies all-rounder Jason Mohammed was the pick of their bowlers. Apart from Mohammed, another all-rounder in Jason Holder also picked a couple of wickets.
In the second innings, West Indies registered a comfortable victory by 8 wickets with three overs remaining in the match. Much like the visitors, West Indian openers also put together a century stand as their 143-run partnership proved to be match-winning one for their team.
While Evin Lewis departed after scoring 65 (90) in the 29th over, wicket-keeper batsman Shai Hope went on to score a brilliant 110 (133) with the help of 12 fours and a six.
