“I never meant to say I was better than Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen”- Fernando Alonso
“I never meant to say I was better than Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen”- Fernando Alonso claims he was a victim of fake news.
Before the qualifying, Fernando Alonso reportedly appeared to call himself better than the others, but now the Spaniard claims that he misheard the question.
In reality, Alonso didn’t intend to call himself a better driver than Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen; instead, he thought the question was a comparison to his former self in 2018.
“I never meant to say I was better than Lewis (Hamilton) or Max (Verstappen) or anyone,” Alonso said. “Probably I misunderstood the question. I thought it was: ‘Are you as good as in 2018 when you left the sport?'”
I really enjoyed driving.
Alonso, after two years, has returned to F1 but could only grab a P9 start for the race on Sunday. Meanwhile, his teammate Esteban Ocon would be starting from P16. Alonso claims he enjoyed driving a car in a Grand Prix after a gap of two years.
“It was great,” he said. “I really enjoyed it. These cars on low fuel and new tyres are very extreme in terms of performance; you have to really trust the car and believe you can go that fast. It was a really nice feeling.”
