“Whatever you do, they can find a rule for it” – Kimi Raikkonen compares the now and then of Formula 1
“Whatever you do, they can find a rule for it” – Kimi Raikkonen has drawn a comparison between how Formula 1 was when he started his career with Sauber two decades ago, and now.
Kimi Raikkonen is the undisputed ‘Grand Old Man’ of Formula 1. His career started with Sauber in 2001, the same team (Alfa Romeo) he is in currently, as he enters the final phase of his career. Between this, he drove for the likes of McLaren, Lotus, and Ferrari, winning the title with the latter.

When asked what has changed in the sport, the Finnish ‘Ice Man’ highlighted the plethora of rules now for just about everything concerning the sport. He also rued the fact that blocking to defend overtaking is almost considered to be a taboo these days, as compared to the Schumacher-Alonso days.
“It differs from race to race but I don’t think there is that much difference.
“The big difference is they have made a rule for everything and there are so many rules that whatever you do, they can find a rule for it, good or bad that depends on what you have done.
“I think in the past when we started, it was probably a bit more fair games in a way with the drivers if you were overtaking.
“They wouldn’t let you pass but it wasn’t so rude with blocking then. We didn’t need rules for this kind of thing but every sport has changed over 20 years. It is part of the game.”
