“Thought Stephen Curry was white”: Kevin Durant was shocked to find out his future Warriors teammate is Dell Curry’s son when they first battled on the AAU circuit as 10-year-olds
Kevin Durant really knew nothing about Stephen Curry the very first time they faced off as 10-year-olds on the AAU circuit.
We’ve had tons of legendary pairings through the course of NBA history. When we think of iconic duos in league history, we’re all reminded of LeBron and D-Wade, MJ and Scottie, Shaq and Kobe, Magic and Kareem. These aforementioned duos are commonly considered up there as the very best.
There is absolutely no doubt that the pairing of Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry belongs in this conversation. They played together for 3 years, and they fit in so seamlessly that they spanked every team that crossed their path.
Fans of other teams will remember their union as the one that broke the league. 2 players with unlimited range and every offensive skill in the book? Good luck guarding these talents – not to mention the roving sniper and elite defender in Klay Thompson.

But before the duo came together with Klay Thompson and Draymond Green to steamroll opponents, KD and Steph were opponents through the course of their basketball journeys.
Stephen Curry is the son of Charlotte legend Dell Curry, who played in the NBA for several years. But as a kid, he was scrawny and looked very different from the average AAU product of the time. KD recalled it fondly during a promo event for NBA 2K15:
“I told Steph this. I was about 10 years old, and our AAU team drove down to Charlotte. And there was one like, I thought he (Curry) was white. This yellow kid, right?”
“Like where I come from, we don’t see the light skin guys. It was always guys like me. I walk in the gym, and this guy just steps across half-court and just pulls the jump shot.”

“So when we played them, he had like 35, and he’s like 10 years old. And I was like, ‘Who is this?’ And 10 years later, oh, that’s Steph Curry. It’s crazy how you cross paths with these guys when your kids.”
