"RuPaul of Big Men": Wrongly Accused of Being Anti-Gay, Shaquille O'Neal Had a Questionable Take About LeBron James' HOF Teammate

In the realm of basketball, Shaquille O’Neal has always been a dominant and influential player, renowned for his larger-than-life personality and undeniable talent on the court. O’Neal has never shied away from expressing his opinions. However, O’Neal’s comments about LeBron’s Hall of Fame teammate, Chris Bosh, sparked controversy amid accusations of being anti-gay. He felt that Bosh was soft and it reminded him of a drag queen, RuPaul.

In 2009, during an interview, O’Neal made headlines with his comment about Chris Bosh, dubbing him the “RuPaul of big men.” While drawing a connection between Bosh’s play style and RuPaul’s persona, O’Neal raised concerns about perpetuating LGBTQ+ stereotypes. The comparison drew immediate attention and sparked controversy.

But this wasn’t Shaq’s first rodeo with the “LGBTQ+” community. There were instances where Shaq’s remarks raised concerns about his understanding and sensitivity towards LGBTQ+ issues.

While playing for the Lakers in 2002, he used a derogatory term with homophobic undertones during a rap performance at a nightclub. Furthermore, in 2003, Shaq also made an offensive remark about Sacramento Kings player Vlade Divac, using a homophobic slur. The Bosh incident just added fuel to the fire, as O’Neal was finally called out on his behavior.

“RuPaul of Big Men,” Shaquille O’Neal sparks controversy with a shocking remark on Chris Bosh

In 2009, during a highly publicized interview, O’Neal stirred up controversy by playfully dubbing Chris Bosh the “RuPaul of big men.” Shaq was responding to Bosh’s remarks following the Suns’ 133-113 victory against the Raptors on February 27th in which the ‘Diesel’ had an impressive outing against the Raptors.

Bosh insinuated that O’Neal’s remarkable performance was due to the refs allowing Shaq to ‘camp in the post’ which was a clear violation of the three-second rule. Instead of making a snarky remark about the game, Shaq chose to go personal.

Many were quick to criticize O’Neal for his comments, terming his words as ‘Anti-Gay’ and ‘Homophobic’. However, O’Neal clarified that he never intended to offend or discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community. Highlighting that his comment was meant as a lighthearted jest towards Bosh’s distinctive play style.

Reacting to Bosh’s Comment, Shaq told the media,

I heard what Chris Bosh said, and that’s strong words coming from the RuPaul of big men,” O’Neal told the Arizona Republic on Sunday, the day after he scored 33 points in the Suns’ 118-111 upset of the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers. “I’m going to do the same thing [in their next meeting, which will not occur until next season]I did before – make him quit. Make ’em quit and complain. It’s what I do.”

Shaquille and his changed perspective on LGBTQ empowerment

Since then, O’Neal has taken steps to show support and inclusivity towards the LGBTQ+ community. He has participated in initiatives promoting acceptance and understanding, including attending LGBTQ+ pride events and supporting organizations working towards equality.

However, Shaq’s commitment to LGBTQ+ empowerment extends beyond gestures and words. He has made monetary contributions to organizations dedicated to LGBTQ+ causes, recognizing the importance of financial support in driving positive change. Through his actions and advocacy, O’Neal has demonstrated that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and fairness, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In a world where acceptance and understanding are still evolving, Shaq’s support for LGBTQ+ empowerment serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society. His efforts contribute to the ongoing movement for LGBTQ+ rights and help foster an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered to be their authentic selves.
