Ferrari confirm broken leg for mechanic in Raikkonen incident
Phew! What a race. Sebastian Vettel displayed some of the finest defensive driving skills to keep Bottas at bay, during the dying stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix to win his 2nd consecutive Grand Prix of the season.
But the highlight(or maybe the biggest talking point) was Kimi Raikkonen’s retirement, which came about in the pit lane, as Kimi ran over a mechanic’s leg.
The mechanic was tasked with fitting the left rear tyre for Raikkonen during his pit stop, but there was apparently a problem with the removal of the tyre and the green light was shown to Raikkonen, causing Kimi to go ahead, while the mechanic was still in position.
Kimi thus ran over the mechanic and Ferrari later confirmed that he had suffered a broken leg.
“Apparently a shinbone and fibula fracture, our thoughts are with Francesco, stay strong” Ferrari tweeted.

Raikkonen too addressed the situation after his retirement, saying that he was just following the ‘green light’.
“I go when the light is green and I don’t see what happens behind,” said Raikkonen.
“Unfortunately he got hurt. But you know my job is to go when the light changes – more [than] that, I don’t know really. Hopefully he’s okay.” he concluded.
Sebastian Vettel clinched the title at the Bahrain Grand Prix, holding Bottas off during the closing stages and giving Ferrari two consecutive wins at the start of the 2018 F1 season.
Ferrari would be ruing Raikkonen’s accident though, as without that there could have been a Ferrari 1-2 on the Bahrain podium.
