Danny Welbeck and David Ospina’s Arsenal future in doubt

Danny Welbeck struggled with form throughout the season, while Ospina’s chances look bleak with the arrival of Bernd Leno.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has already spent an estimated £70 million on signing five big names for the club. The former Paris Saint-Germain boss has done well to build on a squad that he inherited from Arsene Wenger.

The Telegraph has now claimed that following big signings by the Gunners, the futures of Danny Welbeck and David Ospina are in doubt.

Unai Emery managed to grab Bernd Leno’s signature by buying him from Bayer Leverkusen. A major goalkeeping issue has been answered to the Gunners. The German’s signing would mean that Petr Cech is now relegated to being second choice keeper and Ospina would have to look for a new club if he wants to keep playing regularly.

One more thing which puts his future in the dark is that Arsenal might look in to cash on him to keep positive cash flows in their accounts.

A part of several ins and outs could also see Danny Welbeck depart. The former Manchester United signing just has one more year on his contract and no attempt has been made to get a new deal closed. Arsenal already boast the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil, whose presence in the squad could make it difficult for Welbeck to play often.

He has scored only 27 times across four years and managed to make 43 appearances last season after recovering from a major knee injury. Despite his lack of play time, he did make England’s final World Cup squad and travelled to Russia.

On the other hand, potential sales could see Lucas Perez, Carl Jenkinson, Joel Campbell and Chuba Akpom all depart to taste new pastures. Younger players like Maitland-Niles, Reine-Adelaide, Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock, Osei-Tutu and Smith-Rowe could all be sent out on loan to gain experience and sufficient playing time.

Arsenal started their pre-season with a 8-0 mauling of Boreham United and will soon travel to Singapore for the International Champions Cup. There they will take on Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Sevilla before returning home to host defending champions Manchester City on the opening weekend of the Premier League.
