Sebastian Vettel issues warning to Hamilton and Mercedes
Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari had two crushing defeats in the two races leading upto the summer break.
The German was in a comfortable position after Silverstone, having an 8 point lead over Hamilton, with two strong Ferrari circuits to follow.
However, Vettel crashed out of the lead in his home grand prix and then couldn’t really perform in the wet conditions in the Hungarian GP qualifying.
Hamilton cruised to back-to-back wins and now sits comfortably with a 24 point lead at the top of the driver standings.
Everyone on the grid has admitted to the fact that Ferrari have the best package at the moment. However, despite having that technical advantage, Vettel hasn’t quite been able to deliver on the track, something that must be hurting him.
Vettel feels that the pendulum has swung back and forth and nothing that has happened in the past can be changed.
“We had sometimes the pendulum swinging our way, sometimes not,” he said in an interview with Formula1.com
“From my point of view I think it’s been fairly consistent. The one error that was very costly [in Germany] – that was quite small, because I wasn’t even trying but went off.
“That’s part of the game. I can’t rewind the clock. It has happened. It obviously hurt us, but I’m quite confident that if we have the car to fight with, we can put them under pressure and make things happen in the second half.” he added.
Vettel has issued a warning to his rivals, saying that Ferrari have a little more in the bag and are ready to unleash that after the summer break.
“Last year, we lost the championship I think because our car wasn’t quick enough to be a match in the final part of the season, despite what happened with the DNFs,” he said.
“So I hope that this year, and I think this year has shown so far that our car is more efficient, our car is stronger and still has a lot of potential to unleash. I’m quite confident with what’s sitting in the pipeline that we can improve. So we’ll see. It should be an exciting second part of the year.” he concluded.
