27 Years Prior to Victor Wembanyama’s 8 Point Summer League Debut, Kobe Bryant Dazzled the Audience With 27 Point Show
Kobe Bryant was an exceptional player and a true legend of the game. One that some might consider to be one of the greatest players of all time. Nowadays, when the topic of the GOAT is brought up, the NBA’s newest recruit, Victor Wembanyama finds his name thrown into the mix. In fact, Wemby recently made his Summer League debut, where he managed just nine points. And, with this in mind, many have been comparing his debut to that of some of the greats, including Kobe. After all, as one Twitter page pointed out, it was 27 years ago that the Black Mamba burst onto the scene with an epic Summer League performance.
Wembanyama’s highly anticipated debut was rather disappointing. Going up against the Charlotte Hornets, the San Antonio Spurs star scored nine points, grabbing eight rebounds, and five blocks. But, while the five blocks are positive, the man many have dubbed the “Alien” had some rather embarrassing moments. This included getting dunked on by Kai Jones and crossed over by Brandon Miller. A debut to forget, unlike Kobe’s.
Kobe Bryant put on a show in his Summer League debut 27 years ago
Summer League is where NBA rookies can show off their skills a few months prior to the start of the regular season. A chance for them to perhaps seal their place on the roster. And, 27 years ago, Kobe Bryant did not disappoint.
Coming out of high school, Kobe was a huge risk for the Los Angeles Lakers. After all, he was an unproven 17-year-old, that 12 other teams had passed on. But, despite all the doubts surrounding him, the Black Mamba put on a show in 1996. Dazzling fans with what was definitely a sneak peek at the greatness that would follow.
His Summer League debut could not have gone better. Kobe was unstoppable, scoring 27 points and grabbing two boards. This drove him up the pecking order in LA, where in his rookie season he averaged 18 points, three rebounds, and an assist per game off the bench.

Kobe’s Summer League performance certainly allowed him to show his skills as a player. Just like it did Michael Jordan who managed to score 30 points in his debut back in 1984. But, not everyone has a great showing in the tournament. LeBron James, much like Victor Wembanyama left fans disappointed with a 14-point showing.
So, while it is a great platform to test one’s metal, at the end of the day, it cannot determine how a player’s career will unfold.
Victor Wembanyama will get another chance to prove himself in Summer League
Victor Wembanyama may have had a poor showing in his first game, but there is still time for him to prove himself just like Kobe Bryant did. Wemby will get his chance when he takes on Scoot Henderson and the Portland Trailblazers. He is expected to play tonight before the Spurs shut him down until the start of the 2023-2024 season.

Exciting times lie ahead for the city of San Antonio. And, whether he succeeds in Summer League or not, Wembanyama is going to be one to watch come the regular season.
