Fernando Alonso returns to McLaren headquarters, in line for Barcelona testing

Fernando Alonso announced his retirement/sabbatical from F1 late last season, when he confirmed that he was looking to pursue his other motorsport passions.

The Spaniard is chasing the motorsport triple crown and needs a Indianapolis 500 win to become only the second man after Graham Hill to achieve the illustrious feat.

Now, while initially it seemed as if Alonso would never return to the sport and was retiring for good, his recent statements about Formula 1 suggest that he could be back in the next few years.

And the return could actually be a little sooner than expected, as Alonso is reportedly set for week 2 of testing in Barcelona. He will be sitting in that MCL34 and helping McLaren the young duo of Sainz and Norris find their feet before the all important 2019 season.

Alonso posted about his return to the McLaren headquarters on Instagram. He could be visiting in order to finalise the schedule for testing in Barcelona.

“It seems that Alonso will test for half a day, but it is not known if it will happen in the first week or the second,” Marca has reported.

Zak Brown has also confirmed that Alonso’s feedback will be very essential and helpful for both the drivers and the engineers.

Brown and McLaren are confident that the two new recruits would lead the team to success, but who knows, Alonso could be gunning for a comeback to McLaren and F1, if the car performs good enough and McLaren find themselves challenging for race wins.
