Martial and Lingard return to training

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been handed a huge boost as both Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard return to training.

Manchester United bounced back in style to beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Monday after going down to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League at their own turf. Solskjaer is entering the tough period as they prepare to face their arch-rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

With eleven victories in thirteen games, it has been a great start for Solskjaer who is keeping his team ticking with a scintillating attacking philosophy. The likes of Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Jesse Lingard have been rampant in front of the goal by causing havoc to the opponents’ defence.

During their loss to PSG, they were dealt with a huge blow when Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard were forced to be substituted because of injuries. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer delivered a huge message and said that they would miss at least two weeks of action, but they are back in the training complex after a week.

The duo missed the game against Chelsea in the FA Cup, but they could return to face Liverpool in time as Solskjaer is motivated to end Jurgen Klopp’s side title run. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard were photographed when they were heading to the Carrington training complex.

The Manchester Evening report also added that the forwards are present in Manchester United’s training complex to get involved in the rehabilitation process. There should be clarity about their involvement in Sunday’s game after Solskjaer’s press conference which is due to being held on Friday.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken over the club in mid-December, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard have scored four goals and have five assists in between them. Numbers might not tell the story, but their contribution to this side by creating space and finding Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba have increased the team’s goal tally in the final third.

Liverpool maintained their superior defensive record by securing a clean sheet against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16 in a 0-0 draw. It is also to be noted that the Merseysiders were without their key man Virgil Van Dijk and played makeshift centre-half Fabinho against Robert Lewandowski who was nullified by Jurgen Klopp’s defence.

Thomas Tuchel gave a blueprint to rest of the sides to stop Paul Pogba which will automatically succumber United’s creativity. They did that with the likes of Marquinhos and Marco Verrati.

Should Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard miss the game, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku will be expected to start. With both the sides on a high, it will be an interesting high voltage clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.
