Arsenal eye Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira this summer, according to reports from Italy.

The Gunners have reportedly joined the race to sign Sampdoria star midfielder Lucas Torreira. The Uruguyan currently has a €25m release clause at the club.

Transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio reported on his website that Arsenal have opened talks with Sampdoria for a potential transfer for the midfielder, but are currently in dilemma due to money.

Arsenal reportedly don’t want to spend the asked amount.

Di Marzio claims that Uruguyan midfielder’s agent is “demanding too much.”

Torreira is in the 23-member world cup squad as Uruguay aims for glory at the world cup in Russia. The Uruguayan has impressed Unai Emery for his performances in the previous season with Sampdoria.

Torreira made 38 appearances for the club, with 37 starts. He scored four goals and added one assist.

Di Marzio has also reported that Sampdoria’s fellow Serie A club, Napoli remains interested in the midfielder as well. This creates problems for Arsenal.

Arsenal finished a disappointing 6th last season, as the club failed to qualify for the Champions League for second season in a row. The Gunners also lost in the semifinal of the Europa League to eventual winners Atletico Madrid.

Napoli, on the other hand, finished 2nd in the Serie A this season. They have also qualified for the Champions League next season. This would mean that Arsenal will have to place a better offer on the table to persuade Torreira to leave for North London this summer.
