In spite of garnering huge interest from Premier League top guns Liverpool and Arsenal, AS Monaco’s Thomas Lemar has made a U-turn claiming to get a get a move to Spain rather than England. Barcelona have reportedly entered talks to sign the 22-year-old Frenchman either this month or in the summer to bolster their attacking options.
Despite signing both Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho for a combined fee of £250million + this season, the Catalans are ready to splash out another £90million to get the striker on board. Lemar is one of the highest rated prospects in the transfer market at the moment and was close to signing for Arsenal in the summer.
However, things didn’t work out for both parties and the move stalled. AS Monaco would be wary of their strike force, having already lost Kylian Mbappe to Paris-Saint Germain last summer. While Lemar has not yet reached the heights of last season, the Frenchman remains a highly thought of player in world football right now.
When asked on the possibility of letting Lemar go, Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim said: “Today, the market is open. You know how crazy the market is. Things happen that even a club like Monaco cannot say no to. It happened to Liverpool [with Coutinho]. Things are as they are.”
“The numbers today are incredibly big. Everything can change. The things I can say today are not true tomorrow.”
With Ousmane Dembele already serving most of his time out due to injury and Philippe Coutinho too being known for his spells on the sidelines, Lemar could prove to be a great backup option for the runaway La Liga leaders for now.
But you never know what will happen, especially in the transfer window!
