Barcelona have confirmed the signing of the defender Marc Cucurella from SD Eibar.

Barcelona have re-signed Marc Cucurella for €4 million from SD Eibar after activating the buy-back clause. The 20-year-old Spaniard will act as deputy to Jordi Alba in the left-back position.

SD Eibar have confirmed his departure to Barcelona.

The statement read the following:

“Marc Cucurella will not continue in Eibar, after making FC Barcelona effective the player’s repurchase option. The one of Alella arrived at the armory equipment the past season in quality of yielded with option of purchase from the own club culé.

After a brilliant 18/19 season in which the Catalan played 31 league games, scoring one goal and handing out two assists, Eibar executed the purchase option on May 27. Cucurella had started the preseason with the team, but FC Barcelona has executed today the repurchase option he had.

SD Eibar would like to thank Marc Cucurella for his contribution and commitment to date, and wishes him the best of luck in the future.”

Marc Cucurella broke through the academy ranks of Barcelona and made one appearance during the 2017/18 season. There was an automatic clause which saw the left-back sign for SD Eibar in this window. However, Barcelona had an option of re-signing him through a buy-out clause for a cheaper fee, thereby becoming the fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old was mainly part of the Barcelona B side and made 54 appearances in two seasons for the reserves. He played an integral part under Jose Luis Mendilibar last campaign by going on to make 30 appearances in all competitions and found the back of the net once.

With plenty of room for improvement and the prospect of working with Jordi Alba, who is one of the best full-backs in the modern game, should have been enticing for the defender. Cucurella has plenty of time ahead of himself, and the fact that he was part of the La Masia is good enough to earn the backing of the Nou Camp faithful.

With the ability to play through the defensive and attacking flank of the left-hand-side, Cucurella will be a valuable asset for Ernesto Valverde. The left-back will follow Frenkie De Jong, Antoine Griezmann, and Neto to Nou Camp.
