The IPL meeting between the officials and the team owners regarding the Retention policy has come to an end, and while it was initially getting extremely difficult to get everyone on the same page, somehow a consensus has been reached.

IPL teams have been granted the luxury to retain up to 5 players, through a combination of pre-auction retention and Right to Match(RTM) cards(with no more than 3 in each category.

Thus, if teams decide not to retain any player, they will only have 3 RTMs at the auction.

“The player pool available for CSK and RR for retention/RTM will be the players’ who played for them respectively in IPL 2015 and who were part of RPS and GL squads in IPL 2017.”

So, essentially it means that MS Dhoni could very well be returning to the Chennai Super Kings, as all players that had featured for RR and CSK in IPL 2015, will be in contention for retention by the two IPL franchises.

With CSK already having voiced their interest in retaining in Dhoni, it seems highly likely that Dhoni would be donning those yellow colours in IPL 2018.

The retention of the players will have to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Maximum number of 3 Capped Indian players.
  • Maximum number of 2 Overseas players.
  • Maximum number of 2 Uncapped Indian players.
