India batter Ajinkya Rahane has suffered an injury to his right hand while batting in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2021-2023 final against Australia at The Oval. To be precise, Rahane has suffered an injury on the index finger of his right hand.

It all happened on the last delivery of the 22nd over when Rahane was undone by extra bounce on a Pat Cummins delivery. With the ball getting off out of nowhere, Rahane handled it quite well ensuring that it doesn’t lob off the handle of his bat or gloves into the hands of any fielder.
Having said that, Rahane ended up finding his finger coming in between the ball and bat handle in the process. Immediately feeling the pain, Rahane called for medical attention which led to an elongated delay to the match.

With India already losing four wickets, a serious injury to Rahane would’ve hurt their chances right away. In spite of the team doctor heavily taping his index finger, Rahane has opted to continue batting in the middle.
While he is appearing to be in a bit of spot of bother, the 35-year old player is fighting it out in the middle alongside all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja realizing how the team is in a comparatively bigger trouble in an all-important final.
Readers must note that the same happened on what was an extra delivery of the Australian captain’s eighth over of the match. However, had Cummins not bowled a no-ball on the previous ball, Rahane would’ve been dismissed by now.
Given out lbw on the field after being struck on his back pad, Rahane opting to challenge the on-field umpire’s decision led to his survival as replays confirmed that it was a no-ball on the part of Cummins. Had he not overstepped, Australian would’ve picked the fifth Indian wicket as the ball was clipping the stumps.
