During the 23rd match of the ongoing 13th season of the Indian Premier League between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah, Delhi Capitals spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and batsman Shikhar Dhawan joined hands to draw first blood in the second innings.
Given how Ashwin had mankaded Rajasthan Royals wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler in IPL 2019, the pair facing each other was always going to be followed with intrigue by fans.
It all happened on the third delivery of the third over when Buttler’s attempt of finding a gap between short fine leg and square leg saw him getting out after scoring 13 (8) with the help of two fours.
Dhawan, who was fielding at square leg, timed his effort to perfection as he grabbed an excellent catch whilst moving to his right. Chasing a 185-run target, it wasn’t an ideal for RR.
Earlier, it was Royals captain Steven Smith who had won the toss and chose to field. Despite losing four wickets in the first half of their innings, Capitals scored 184/8 in 20 overs on the back of their overseas duo in Marcus Stoinis (39) and Shimron Hetmyer (45) contributing in the middle-order.
With bowling figures of 4-0-23-3, Rajasthan pacer Jofra Archer was the pick of their bowlers. Apart from Archer, RR all-rounder Rahul Tewatia bowled an economical spell of 4-0-20-1.
Ashwin vs Buttler
How Twitterati reacted:
How often we’ve seen ego get the better of good sense in this game? Butler v Ashwin was highly anticipated, but finished before it started, so to speak, with the batsman playing an ambitious slog sweep to dominate the bowler. Gr8 catch by Dhawan
