International cricket has returned to Guwahati just over three months after the city last hosted an India-South Africa T20I last year. Barsapara Cricket Stadium, which has hosted only three international matches till date, will be hosting its second ODI in the form of the first of three ODIs between India and Sri Lanka.

In what is a comparatively newer stadium, it has only hosted a solitary ODI thus far. That being said, it doesn’t mean that the city has been bereft of this format. Readers must note that Guwahati’s Nehru Stadium had hosted 14 ODIs between 1983-2010.
India, who’ve played 11 ODIs in this city (across both stadiums), have won seven and lost four matches over the years. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have neither played a match at the Barsapara Stadium nor won an ODI at the Nehru Stadium out of three attempts between 1987-1997.
Barsapara Stadium ODI records
There aren’t a lot of ODI records with respect to this venue due to a minuscule one-match sample size. It was over four years ago when India had registered a thumping 8-wicket victory over West Indies in the inaugural ODI here.
Highest run-scorers from that match were Rohit Sharma (152), Virat Kohli (140) and Shimron Hetmyer (106). As far as highest wicket-takers are concerned, Yuzvendra Chahal (3), Ravindra Jadeja (2) and Mohammed Shami (2) were among the wickets back in the day. It is worth mentioning that no other current Indian player barring Sharma, Kohli, Chahal and Shami had played that match.
Highest innings total in Guwahati ODIs
Chasing a 323-run target, India had scored 326/2 in just 42.1 overs against West Indies as the same remains both the highest ODI innings total and the highest successful run-chase at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Considering how Sharma’s 20th ODI century and Kohli’s 36th ODI century had come in a match-winning 186-ball 246-run second-wicket partnership, Indian fans wouldn’t mind being witness to another such mammoth stand tomorrow.
