England have handed respective comebacks to Chris Woakes, David Willey and Liam Dawson for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Contrary to Woakes and Willey, Dawson is a left-spinner who had played the last of his six T20Is during the tour of New Zealand in 2018. It is worth mentioning that all the three players have it in them to contribute with the ball as well.
Woakes, who has played 38 Tests and 104 ODIs for England, has only represented his country eight times in the shortest format. While the 32-year old player had last played other formats for England in 2020, his last T20I dates back to 2015.
As far as Willey is concerned, he had made a comeback into the ODI and T20I squad last year after being unceremoniously dropped before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. While Willey had picked a four-wicket haul on his ODI comeback against Ireland, he wasn’t given an opportunity in T20Is last year.
The aforementioned players have replaced the likes of Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Reece Topley from the squad which had toured India earlier this year and remain the only three changes to the 16-member squad. It is worth mentioning that the trio has missed out on selection due to their respective injuries.

“With several high-profile players missing through injury, it allows me to look at some of our experienced players who have not featured at this level for some time. The likes of Chris Woakes and David Willey are very experienced cricketers, and to have them both in the mix is exciting and shows the depth of squad we have available,” England head coach Chris Silverwood said in a statement.
