England tour of India 2021: Sri Lanka offer to host India-England Test series this winter, say reports

Sri Lanka offer to host India-England Test series: Sri Lanka Cricket has reportedly written to the BCCI regarding hosting the high-profile Test series.

Sri Lanka Cricket has reportedly offered to host England’s Test series against India in the wake of the COVID-19 threat in India.

While the global pandemic affected the world in more ways than one, Sri Lanka has remained comparatively safe with only less than 3,000 cases till date. As far as the currently active cases are concerned, the country has less than 250 COVID-19 cases.

It is worth mentioning that England were scheduled to tour India in September for white-ball series and in January 2021 for a five-match Test series. After the white-ball series getting postponed last week, it was being said that both England Cricket Board and BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) are working towards an all-format tour.

Sri Lanka offer to host India-England Test series

England, whose tour of Sri Lanka got postponed due to COVID-19 in March, are expected to travel to the island nation during this winter season to play the pending Test series. The report suggested that England could play against India after the Sri Lanka Tests in Sri Lanka itself.

“The possibility of England staying back after their two Tests in Sri Lanka to complete the series against India has been given some thought after SLC came up with the suggestion,” the report said according to The Times of India.

Having previously offered to host IPL 2020, Sri Lanka was among the two front-runners to host the biggest T20 league. Much like England, even India had to postpone their tour of Sri Lanka due to coronavirus.

A BCCI official further said that the board hasn’t taken any call on the matter. Considering that IPL 2020 is almost a month away, one expects them to be wholly working on the cash-rich league.

“At this point, the BCCI is not even entertaining such a proposal as it is still four months away,” the BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
