"It would be awesome if he did": Brendon McCullum believes Rehan Ahmed deserves bid in IPL auction 2023

The name of England’s spinner Rehan Ahmed is on everyone’s mind at the moment after his historic performance in the debut test against Pakistan in Karachi. Rehan’s name will go under the hammer in the upcoming IPL 2023 auction, and Brendon McCullum wants him to get a deal.

The leg-spinner became the youngest debutant in the history of test cricket to grab a fifer. Rehan is a Pakistan-origin guy, and he played a big part in England’s win in the 3rd test. He was a part of England’s U-19 squad as well and has performed well with the white-ball as well in his hand.

Rehan has played in the T20 Blast for Leicestershire, whereas he has played in the Hundred cricket as well for the Southern Brave. He also has a contract with Gulf Giants in the upcoming ILT20 League in UAE. It is safe to say that Rehan will be seen playing in different T20 Leagues around the world very soon.

Brendon McCullum believes Rehan Ahmed deserves bid in IPL auction 2023

Brendon McCullum, who has worked with Kolkata Knight Riders as head coach believes that getting a bid in the IPL auction will do a lot of good for the young Rehan Ahmed. He said that playing under different coaches and different captains will do a lot of good for the youngster.

The leg-spinners are genuine wicket-takers in the T20 format, and RCB bought Wanindu Hasaranga for a hefty price in the last auction. Although, it has been seen that overseas spinners have not got many deals in the auction. The players like Adil Rashid, Imran Tahir, Adam Zampa, etc all have struggled to get regular deals.

Although, Rehan’s base price is just INR 40 lacs, and he has FC century under his belt as well, which may help him to get a deal in the upcoming Auction.

“It would be great,” Brendon McCullum told BBC’s Test Match Special.

“It would be awesome if he did. Why not? Why not get an opportunity to go and play under different coaches and different captains and rub shoulders with different players and pick up those experiences? What 18-year-old kid anywhere else in world cricket is going to get those chances? I think we should encourage it.”
