India captain Virat Kohli was short of words while describing a horrendous day of Test match cricket at the Adelaide Oval. Speaking during the presentation ceremony after losing the first Test against Australia by 8 wickets, Kohli laid emphasis on a poor hour’s play costing them the match.
“It’s very hard to put those feeling into words,” Kohli was quoted as saying by Fox Sports. “We had a lead of 60-odd when we arrived. And then just collapsed. Played two days of good cricket to get in a position and then just lose it in an hour. Really hurts. Probably didn’t have enough intent in the batting today.

“Bowlers bowled similar kind of areas in the first innings as well, but then our mindset was to get runs. There were some good balls. But I don’t think it did anything drastic. Just the atmosphere was created where runs were difficult to come by. I think it was a combination of both – lack of intent, and bowlers bowling in good areas,” he said.
On the morning of Day 3, the visiting batsmen made a mess of a 62-run overnight lead as they got dismissed for their lowest-ever Test match score – 36.

Kohli, who won’t be taking any further part in the Test series as he will be flying back to India to be with his wife Anushka Sharma for the birth of their first child, expressed confidence in the team doing well in his absence.
“Obviously you want to be committed to the team’s cause. Confident the boys going forward will reflect on this and come up with a better result on Boxing Day,” Kohli added.

In addition to the terrible loss, India have another worry under their belt around the fitness of fast bowler Mohammed Shami. The 30-year old player had to retire hurt after a brutal Pat Cummins delivery hit him on the elbow. Not bowling in the second innings, Shami will sure have the attention of millions of Indians for the visitors can hardly afford to miss another player after such a loss.
“No news on [Mohammed] Shami. He’s going for a scan now. Was in a lot of pain, couldn’t even lift his arm. We’ll probably know in the evening what happens,” Kohli mentioned.
