The second round of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2022-23 commenced today, and the limelight of the opening day was hogged by the world’s no.1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav, who made a return back to the tournament after almost three years.

Playing in his own inimitable, aggressive manner, Yadav returned back after scoring 90 runs off mere 80 deliveries, with the help of 15 Fours and a Six in the Group B match against Hyderabad.

Apart from Yadav, skipper Ajinkya Rahane (139*) and in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (162) smashed respective centuries as well, as Mumbai posted a mammoth total of 457/3 on the board at Stumps on Day 1 at the Bandra Kurla Complex.

Another Indian international Deepak Hooda (133) returned with an impressive performance for Rajasthan against Kerala, in the Group C match, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. They finished the day at the score of 310/5 in 87 Overs.

Ranji Trophy over limit

The group stage matches in the Ranji Trophy are played over a period of four days, while the knock out contests can go on till the fifth day akin the international Test matches.

All the days comprise of a duration of six playing hours, which equals to a minimum of 90 Overs in a day.

As per the Ranji Trophy rules, the minimum number of Overs in a day to be completed, unless an innings ends or an interruption occurs, shall be:

– on days other than the last day – a minimum of 90 overs

– on the last day – a minimum of 75 overs (or 15 overs per hour) for playing time other than the last hour.

If, on the last day of the match, a minimum of 75 Overs have not been bowled with one hour of scheduled play remaining, the last hour will commence only when the 75th Over is completed.

The last hour will then comprise of 15 Overs. However, if at any time after 30 minutes of the last hour have elapsed both the captains can mutually agree to cease the further continuance of play in case they feel that a result cannot be obtained.
