Rohit Sharma run out: Jason Roy undone by Indian vice-captain's brilliant fielding in Pune ODI

Rohit Sharma run out: The Indian vice-captain single-handedly broke a potentially dangerous 110-run opening partnership.

During the second ODI of the ongoing England’s tour of India in Pune, India vice-captain Rohit Sharma put on display an acrobatic fielding effort to dismiss England opening batsman Jason Roy.

It all happened on the third delivery of the 17th over when Roy and his opening partner Jonny Bairstow found themselves in the middle of the pitch on the back of a huge miscommunication at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Facing India spinner Kuldeep Yadav, Bairstow nudged a delivery on the leg-side to show interest in a single. In what would have been a tight single, it resulted in a wicket after Sharma dived to his right at short mid-wicket to stop the ball.

With Sharma surprising the English opening pair with his brilliant effort, what followed was Roy and Bairstow registering an archetype communication error. Apart from stopping the ball, Sharma was also agile enough to throw the ball to India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, who dislodged the bails and sent back Roy.

Replicating their stand from the last match, Roy and Bairstow once again put together a counter-attacking opening partnership in a 337-run chase. In what was his 19th ODI half-century, Roy departed after scoring 55 (52) with the help of seven fours and a six.

After England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and invited the hosts in to bat, India scored 336/6 in 50 overs on the back of batsman Lokesh Rahul’s fifth ODI century. While Rahul scored 108 (114) with the help of seven fours and two sixes, Pant (77) and captain Virat Kohli (66) had alsco scored individual half-centuries.
