Shreyas Iyer injury: Jonny Bairstow checks on Iyer as Indian physio carries him off the field in Pune ODI

Shreyas Iyer injury: The Indian batsman has become the third player to get injured at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium today.

During the first ODI of the ongoing England’s tour of India in Pune, India batsman Shreyas Iyer became the third player to get injured on the field. Before Iyer, England batsman Sam Billings and captain Eoin Morgan had suffered respective injuries in the first innings.

It all happened on the fourth delivery of the eighth innings when England opening batsman Jonny Bairstow smashed a Shardul Thakur delivery through the cover region. Iyer, who was fielding at cover, did exceedingly well to dive to his left and save a couple of runs for his team.

However, Iyer ended up injuring himself in the process. Much like Billings, Iyer’s body weight also fell on his shoulder causing instant pain. Clearly suffering despite receiving medical attention, Iyer had to be taken off the field.

It is worth mentioning that reserve batsman Shubman Gill was called upon to replace Iyer in the middle at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Just as Iyer was walking off, Bairstow ran down to the injured player to check on him as he registered a “Spirit of Cricket” moment.

In the first innings, it was Morgan who had continued his trend of winning the toss and electing to field. On the back of individual half-centuries from opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan (98), wicket-keeper batsman Lokesh Rahul (62 not out), Krunal Pandya (58 not out) and captain Virat Kohli (56), the hosts put on board a dominating 317/5 in 50 overs.

Iyer, who had come in to bat at No. 4 in the 33rd over, played an ordinary shot to gift his wicket to England pacer Mark Wood after scoring 6 (9).
