Ahead of the Sri Lanka ODI series, Rohit Sharma said that the team will prefer Shubman Gill over Ishan Kishan as an opener. This decision caused a lot of debate as Ishan scored a double century in his last ODI, but it is safe to say that Gill has proved all his doubters wrong. He scored a wonderful double-century in the 1st ODI against New Zealand.

Gill scored a century in the last ODI against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, and he continued his form in the first ODI against New Zealand as well in Hyderabad. The Indian batters failed to score against the New Zealand bowlers, but Gill had his eyes set, and he just kept on going.
Gill was extremely confident in his backfoot play, and he always kept his strike-rate in check. Gill completed his century in just 87 balls by taking a single on Mitchell Santner’s delivery. Gill became the third-fastest batter to score 1000 runs in ODIs. Even Hardik Pandya was elated for Gill, who was at the non-striker’s end.
Shubman Gill last 5 ODI innings
Gill missed the away series in Bangladesh, and with the kind of form he was in, he certainly would have scored runs there as well. He has played his last 5 ODI against Sri Lanka and New Zealand only, where he has scored two centuries and one half-century. The form in which Gill is in at the moment will give a lot of confidence to the Indian team.
Gill scored his maiden century against Zimbabwe last year, and he was always the backup opener in the absence of Rohit Sharma. He was very disappointed when he got out on 70 runs against Sri Lanka in Guwahati. However, he finally made his 2nd ODI century in Thiruvananthapuram.
It is safe to say that Gill will be the opening partner of Rohit in the ODI World Cup later this year in India. He has scored 497 runs in the last 5 innings at an average of 99.40.
