When Did England Last Win The Ashes?

England had last won The Ashes Trophy more than half-a-decade ago at their own den. In fact, ever since England’s 2-1 victory during the ever-famous Ashes 2005 series, Australia have toured England four times and have failed to defeat them in the five-match series.

Having said that, England have not triumphed in each of the previous three Ashes series in 2017/18, 2019, and the last one in 2021/22. The one in 2019, which they had played at home, ended in a 2-2 draw and which meant that England lost out on a wonderful opportunity to regain the urn.

Their last Ashes victory had arrived under the captaincy of Sir Alastair Cook, when Michael Clarke was the skipper of the Australian side.

When Did England Last Win The Ashes?

It was the Ashes series of 2015, which England had won by a 3-2 margin. After having won the first Test at Cardiff handsomely by 169 runs, the English side were handed a heavy shellacking 405-run defeat at Lord’s.

However, they roared back in style during the third and fourth Test matches to register victories by margins of 8 wickets and an innings and 78 runs respectively. While the Clarke-led side had lost the final Test at The Oval by an innings 46 runs, the hosts had already registered their fourth successive Ashes victory on home soil by then.

Joe Root was the standout performer with the bat for England during the home series, having scored 460 runs across 9 innings at an average of 57.50. On the other hand, it was pacer Stuart Broad who had emerged to be the highest wicket-taker in the series with 21 scalps across 9 innings at an average of 20.90.

Broad’s eight-wicket haul during the fourth Test was the standout performance of the series, which had led to Australia being dismissed at the score of 60 in just an hour-and-a-half into their first innings.
