Diego Costa bags four goals and receives marching orders as Atletico Madrid humiliate Real Madrid 7-3

Typical Diego Costa performance saw him score four goals and get a red card against Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid thrashed Real Madrid 7-3 at Metlife Stadium, New York. It was an exhilarating performance from Diego Simeone’s men, who went on bagging five goals in the first half.

Striker Diego Costa opened the scoring in the early stages of the game before adding further three goals, with two in the first half and one in the second half. Other scorers for the Los Rojiblancos were the record signing Joao Felix, Angel Correa, and Vitolo.

The former Chelsea striker breezed past the defence headed by Sergio Ramos for fun. He completed a resounding hat-trick before half time and added one six minutes into the second half.

It just didn’t stop there because it is Diego Costa.

The Brazil-born Spanish International was sent off in the 65th minute after a brawl with his national teammate Dani Carvajal. The Real Madrid right-back also received the marching orders from the referee.

Thomas Lemar plucking the ball from Dani Carvajal’s foot sees the Spanish International kicking him with total frustration. Diego Costa, who was two yards away from this incident, pushed Carvajal down. A fight occurred between numerous Atletico and Real Madrid players which forced the managers to enter the pitch and diffuse the heated situation.

After the incident concluded, the referee had no choice other than handing over red cards to Diego Costa and Dani Carvajal. The Real Madrid defender received for an atrocious tackle on Atletico Madrid’s number 11, whereas, Diego Costa was uncontrollable during the protest.

Real Madrid scored through Nacho, Karim Benzema, and Javi Hernandez scored in the second half to cut down the deficit to four.

Los Blancos Skipper Sergio Ramos took a sly dig at Atletico Madrid in the post-match interview.

As per Marca, he said: “We must continue working with the right attitude. They approached the game as if it were a final. They beat us in intensity and were very good in front of goal.”

However, Zidane is vexed about this performance demanding a good display in the upcoming games as the La Liga kicks off in three weeks time.

“What happened is that we entered the game very badly. A high-level competition, we entered very badly,” Zidane was quoted as saying by Goal after the match.

“At eight minutes we were down 2-0. There was no response from us to change something. The first part was difficult. We never entered the game. We have lacked everything. Especially intensity.”

He continued: “They scored seven goals, it can’t happen. That is also known to the players, who are disappointed. You don’t have to spin it over. It’s a pre-season game. They’ve been better at everything. There is nothing more to talk about.

“We are preparing a season and being calm. We have to be on August 17, with the first league game. For now, we have lacked things for sure tonight.”
