England squad for 4th Test vs Australia: Will James Anderson play the Old Trafford Test?

England squad for 4th Test vs Australia: England have announced a 13-member squad for the fourth Test of the ongoing series.

England have announced a 13-member squad for the fourth Test of the ongoing 2019 Ashes series between England and Australia at Old Trafford. Slated to begin on September 4, England have added an extra fast bowler to their squad.

In what is the only change in the squad, Somerset fast bowler Craig Overton has been added to the squad. Having made his Test debut during Ashes 2017 in Adelaide, Overton has picked seven wickets in three Tests at an average of 42.28, an economy rate of 3.52 and a strike rate of 72.

In eight matches in the County season this year, Overton has dismissed 32 batsmen at an average of 21.34, an economy rate of 2.79 and a strike rate of 45.8.

Will James Anderson play the Old Trafford Test?

Before the announcement of the squad, there were a lot of eyes on veteran fast bowler James Anderson’s fitness. After succumbing to a calf injury in the first Test, Anderson was ruled out of the remaining two Test matches.

It is worth mentioning that Anderson suffered a recurrence of the injury while trying to prove his fitness in a Lancashire second XI match. The 37-year old fast bowler has been ruled out of the series which means that he won’t take part in The Oval Test as well.

Coming on the back of a nerve-wrenching 1-wicket victory against Australia in the third Test at Headingley, England can’t afford to lose another match in the series for even a drawn series will see the visitors retaining the Ashes.
