Lewis Hamilton has been all over the news recently because of the expectation that he would sign a contract extension with Mercedes. Since the same has not happened, speculations have already begun about his future. Reports have emerged that the seven-time F1 world champion already has a retirement plan in place.
Amid speculations that Hamilton is keen on trying other forms of motorsports such as IndyCar after his retirement in F1, Formula E driver Lucas di Grassi has given his thoughts on the same. Grassi believes that Hamilton would be crazy to even think of the same as IndyCar is too “risky“.
Grassi believes that such a move is not worth the risk for Hamilton, who has nothing left to prove after a splendid F1 career. Hamilton is arguably one of the greatest of all times if not the greatest as he has a joint record of seven world championships to his name, alongside several other records.
Lucas di Grassi warns Lewis Hamilton about IndyCar risk
While Lewis Hamilton has not decided on his next career move yet, he has left the door open to trying other forms of motorsport such as IndyCar. When asked for his thoughts on Hamilton’s interests and whether he would like to try IndyCar, Lucas di Grassi told Total-Motorsprot.com, “Not at all“.
The Formula E driver then explained his point by describing the risks involved in IndyCar. “IndyCar, I don’t like the ovals. I have two kids. I have seen too many accidents,” he explained.
Di Grassi then went on to question Hamilton‘s desire of trying IndyCar by stating that the Mercedes F1 driver has nothing left to prove. However, he did suggest that the Briton could still try out this sport as he does not have kids.
“If you don’t have kids, maybe you could risk it. I think Hamilton would be crazy to do ovals or IndyCar to be honest. Why would you? What do you have to prove,” Di Grassi concluded.
F1 drivers usually try other motorsports after retirement
Even though many believe that F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports, the best of drivers are often not content with success in just this sport. The best of drivers often want to prove their worth elsewhere and show that they have the ability to take on different challenges.
Two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso and 2009 champion Jenson Button are the prime examples of the same. Before returning to F1 in the 2021 season, Alonso tried his hand at other forms of endurance racing such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans during his two-year hiatus.
On the other hand, Button too recently tried his hand at NASCAR. And these are not the only two F1 greats that have done so, as 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen has also competed in other forms of motorsports. Raikkonen competed in the World Rally Championship in 2009 before trying his hand at NASCAR on two different occasions (2011, 2023).
